Cells with upstream drainage areas greater than 4.5 sqkm were selected from the flow accumulation layer and processed through the STREAMLINK function. After that the STREAMORDER function was run against it applying the STRAHLER method. The resulting output from the STREAMORDER function assigned a numeric order to the grid representing branches of a linear network. The greater the value the higher the stream order or the greater the volume of water flowing down the stream. It is also important to note that this linear network does not represent the true physical stream network; it is only a representation of the drainage network based on the SRTM Level 2 (30 meter) DEM. This difference is seen in areas were there is little or no slope. The data layers are often referred to as "synthetic streams" because of this fact Stream order data is utilized by the scientific and resource management communities, hydrologic modeling, resource monitoring, mapping, and visualization applications. This spatial data set is a derived from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM) data set. Before producing all, but the shaded relief data sets the 30m DEM want through a 4 step conditioning process. These steps include: the Delta Surface Fill Method, stream burning, 3x3 spatial smoothing, and hydrologic sink filling process. The original SRTM DEM has gaps or voided data values throughout its coverage area. These gaps were a result of a number of issues such as topological shadowing, phase unwrapping anomalies, or other radar-specific causes (USGS, 2006). These gaps were filled with existing lower resolution DEM data sets using a SRTM/DEM merge process called Delta Surface Fill (DSF) developed by the United States National Geo-spatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) (Grohman 2006). The lower resolution DEM used to fill the gaps were a combination two data sets. These data sets include a 90m DEM derived from contour lines based off NGA's Vector Smart Map (Vmap) level 1 product where available and CGIAR-CSI SRTM 90m filled SRTM data was used (CGIAR, 2004). The stream burning was only applied to areas of the DEM were preliminary drainage networks were not consistent with the natural drainage network represented in orthorectified Landsat ETM imagery or were physical barriers needed to broken such as dams or elevation anomalies that would of caused excessive filling during the fill process. The 3x3 spatial smoothing was applied to minimize any anomalies that occur in SRTM DEM data sets while preserving the linear drainage network (Lehner, 2006). The final step in conditioning the DEM was to fill all anomalous sinks using ArcGIS Hydrology Fill process. Natural sinks were identify and preserved.
