  • Abstract
  • The 2011_DFO_floodextent_v1 dataset is reflecting the accumulation of the daily MODIS Surface Water detection product “2D2O” of 2011 that is provided by the NASA’s MODIS Near Real-Time Global Flood Mapping Project, implementing the water detection algorithm of Dartmouth Flood Observatory (DFO). NASA started their efforts to provide a daily 2D2O early 2011, however this product incrementally increased spatially. So for some of the 10 degrees tiles data was not generated till August. However, other areas have coverage starting at March 2011. SO the 2011_DFO_floodextent_v1 map is covering a temporal range between March and August 2011. The applied daily 2D2O product is a moving 2 day composite of 4 MODIS images (2 by Terra and 2 by Aqua satellite). Water will be only be marked as surface water when: 1) for this moving 2day composite, 2 or more images indicate water at a certain location; 2) for two adjacent 2day composite files (reflecting two adjacent days) only the intersecting surface water cells that consist of 3 or more adjacent grid cells (each 250m2 large). The 2D2O product includes a first order approach by NASA to filter out terrain shadows, this is further enhanced by applying above mentioned filter. However, accumulating daily output over a year still tends to reflect incorrect surface water extents for mountainous regions. The 2011_DFO_floodextent_v1 version 1 dataset is a shapefile composite reflecting flood water extents for 2011 for South and Middle America.
